Commitments keep coming as UConn keeps killing it on recruiting trail

UConn has been killing it on the recruiting trail lately. Pun intended.

Over the last couple of weeks, the Huskies have received pledges from a trio of Class of 2017 recruits: Makai Ashton-Langford, who chose UConn over Providence in a down-to-the-wire battle; Josh Carlton, a 6-10 center from DeMatha High (originally from North Carolina) and, on Tuesday, Tyler Polley, a 6-8 1/2 forward from the Sagemont School in Florida. If that school sounds familiar, it's because former UConn commit Prince Ali played there, too, and was a teammate of Polley's. Ali wound up de-committing, of course, and heading to UCLA, but there were no hard feelings, and he spoke well of UConn to Polley.

Polley's recruitment is also interesting because he had started being recruited by Dwayne Killings about a year ago when Killings was an assistant coach at Temple. Killings, of course, joined UConn's staff this past spring, continued Polley's recruitment and got Kevin Ollie interested in him. And, voila, another Husky commitment.

Hamidou Diallo, Steve Enoch, Mamadou Diarra, Bruce Brown at Mary Kline Classic; Jalen Adams not

A few tidbits from the Mary Kline Classic at West Orange (N.J.) High:

*** Jalen Adams did not attend. No real reason given, just a lack of communication with the event's organizers over the past couple of weeks.

*** Bruce Brown, the Class of 2016 guard out of Vermont Academy who is Adams's cousin, said that UConn is a bit off his radar right now.

"They're not really recruiting me as hard as everybody else is," said Brown, who said that Michigan and Arizona are among those school recruiting him the hardest.

*** Mamadou Diarra looked strong and athletic in the low post, with a few dunks -- including this one:

Diarra finished with 20 points, mostly on dunks. He's got good feet, and a good body. Seems fairly skilled.

*** Hamidou Diallo -- who last week said that if he was picking a school now, it would be UConn -- said that there is no timetable for his decision.

"When the time is right," he said. St. John's, Syracuse, Providence and Wake Forest are among his many other suitors.

When asked what he's looking for in a program, Diallo said: "A place that makes me feel like I'm at home. And a coach that doesn't lie to me."

Diallo said he is looking to improve his strength and ballhandling this summer.

I wanted to ask Diallo if he was any relation to Amadou Diallo, the native of Guinea who was shot and killed by four plain-clothed police officers on Feb. 4, 1999. The killing sparked a firestorm of controversy, as the officers fired 41 shots at Diallo -- 19 of which hit him -- even though he was unarmed.

Hamidou said that he is not related, but that his family knew Amadou Diallo's family back in Africa, though not when they both lived in New York City.

*** Steve Enoch said he'll be arriving at Storrs sometime in mid-June for summer courses. His goals on the basketball court this summer?

"Getting stronger, and improving my motor. I have a pretty decent motor, but there's always room for improvement."

Asked Enoch about UConn's three new transfer additions over the past month -- Shonn Miller and Sterling Gibbs, who'll both play this season, and Terry Larrier, who won't be eligible until the 2016-17 season -- Enoch said:

"It's real interesting. I'm waiting to see what we can work with this year."

Enoch is expecting to come in and help UConn right off the bat, at least off the boards this season. The addition of Miller, who led Cornell with 8.5 rebounds per game last season, should take some of the pressure off Enoch.

"Fifth-year seniors are always a good value to a team," the 6-foot-10 Enoch said.

*** I realize this is ancient history by now, but not sure if I had ever heard Prince Ali's reasoning for de-committing from UConn last year. So, asked him why.

"I committed a little early," he said. "I decided to open things up, I was having a good summer. It was nothing with the coaching staff, nothing going on. I just decided to open up, check out other schools. If I had waiting a little longer (to commit), I doubt it would have ever happened."

No hard feelings, he stressed.

"Kevin Ollie's a great guy, all the coaches are great people, I'm cool with their players. They're great people."

Ali will take his talents to UCLA instead.

Will Jackson decommits, but UConn appears to strong with Derrick Jones

As UConn bids adieu to one Class of 2015 recruit, it appears to be in pretty good standing with another.

Will Jackson, who committed to UConn back in February, has decommitted and instead lent his commitment to Georgia, according to multiple reports:

Along with Prince Ali's recent decision to re-open his commitment, that leaves talented Boston guard Jalen Adams as the Huskies' only Class of 2015 commit at this point.

But it looks like UConn is in good with Philadelphia's Derrick Jones, the No. 33-ranked player in his class, according to rivals.com. Jones, a 6-foot-6 small forward who plays at Archbishop Carroll in Philly, visited UConn last Monday with his AAU coach -- who just happens to be New Haven native and former Hillhouse standout Terrell Myers.

"I think Coach (Kevin) Ollie did a great job while we were there," said Myers, who knows Ollie from his college playing days at St. Joseph's, as well as from playing against him in pro-am leagues. "They crossed the t's, dotted the i's, explained what UConn basketball is all about. He really, really enjoyed his visit. It's a place he can really, really thrive."

Myers added that Jones is "a great kid, an amazing kid, probably the most athletic player we have right now. He has the ability to do so many things."

"He's extremely athletic, and really knows how to play the game of basketball, as well. He understands the nuances of it, all the small details. That's the greatest thing about him. His upside can be tremendous, he's just still scratching the surface. He's so athletic, people don’t understand other things he can do because he wows you with his athleticism."

Jones does need to get stronger, but, as Myers noted, so does Daniel Hamilton. And so did DeAndre Daniels and Jeremy Lamb and any number of recent talented UConn recruits.

Jones went to the Syracuse Elite camp last summer and has visited a few schools locally, but doesn't have anything else lined up at the moment.

"He's 17, so making a decision for college is tough," Myers noted. "He's trying to figure out what to wear tomorrow."

His visit to UConn came largely as a result of Myers coming back to the area.

"I was coming up that way," Myers said, "and I thought it would be a good opportunity for him to see the school."

Myers used to run a basketball camp each summer at which Ollie would come to speak.

"Without calling him, he just showed up and spoke to the kids," Myers recalled. "He's always been a thorough guy."

Jones isn't the only player on the Philly-based We-R1 AAU team that UConn is interested in. There's also Sedee Keita, a 6-9, Class of 2016 center from Delaware who plays at Vermont Academy. And the Huskies have also inquired about Malik Ellison, a 6-5, Class of '15 swingman who is the son of former Louisville star "Never Nervous" Pervis Ellison.

"UConn’s a great place with a great basketball history," Myers said. "I think Coach Ollie is a guy who’s gonna take it to another level."

Some might say he already has.

Prince Ali Re-Opens Recruitment, Still Considering UConn

Prince Ali, a 2015 UConn commit, has apparently decided to re-open his recruitment.

So much for Kevin Ollie's new contract having a positive effect on recruiting.

Ali is a 6-foot-4 shooting guard out of Florida who committed to UConn last November. While it's not known why Ali made his decision, it's possible he saw a logjam at his position in Storrs. The Huskies have Omar Calhoun back in the fold, with Daniel Hamilton and Sam Cassell, Jr. also coming in next year and Rodney Purvis eligible after sitting out a year as a transfer. UConn's only other 2015 commit is Will Jackson, another 6-4 shooting guard. All of those players could still be at UConn once the 2015-16 season starts.

And, the Huskies appear to be high on the lists of both Jalen Adams (more of a point guard) and Malik Newman, another pair of 2015 guards.

Will Jackson Commits to UConn

As first reported by @OntheRadarHoops via Twitter, Will Jackson has committed to play at UConn.

Jackson is a 6-foot-5, Class of 2015 point guard out of Athens Christian School in Georgia. He visited UConn for First Night festivities and is the school's second 2015 commit, along with shooting guard Prince Ali.

UConn certainly will have a loaded backcourt in 2015-16, with Jackson, Ali, Rodney Purvis, Terrence Samuel, Daniel Hamilton, Omar Calhoun and Sam Cassell, Jr. ostensibly all in the fold. It would seem that now, UConn's prime recruiting focus will be on big men.

UConn Lands 2015 Guard Prince Ali

UConn has received its first verbal commitment from the Class of 2015 in Prince Ali, a four-star junior guard from Weston (Fla.) Sagemont Upper School.

According to national recruiting analyst Evan Daniels, Ali's family is from the Bronx and moved down to Florida a few years ago. But he still considers New York City home, and that's one of the big reasons he wanted to come to Storrs.

Kevin Ollie is another big reason.

“Their style of play is ideal for him,” Sagemont coach Adam Ross told Daniels. “He’s a very athletic guard that likes to play fast and get up and down. They’ve had guys like him that have been very successful. I think it’s a great fit.”
