My AP Top 25 ballot this week

Lots of turmoil among the top 25 this week, which is how we like. Makes picking a new ballot each Sunday night/Monday morning all the more challenging ... and enjoyable.

We stick with Maryland at No. 1, even though the Terps had to rally to beat Rider, at home, and also nearly lost to 1-3 Georgetown (though the Hoyas are still pretty good). We welcome Miami and bid farewell to Michigan. Really wanted to get Tulsa and George Washington in there, after their respective wins over Wichita State and Virginia. But both came on their respective home floors, which makes so much of a difference. It's why I'm not even punishing North Carolina all that much for losing to Northern Iowa. There really aren't too many easy "true" road games in college basketball.

Plus, I wasn't quite comfortable having four American Conference teams in my Top 25. Yet. But that could happen. The league looks pretty strong at the top, with UConn, SMU, Cincinnati and Tulsa all fielding very good teams. Memphis, Temple and Houston remain to be seen. After that? BIG drop-off.

  1. I know the UCONN horde hates the Big East now, but no Xavier and Nova at 14th just past UCONN seems a little over the top.

  2. You overlooked Purdue. They just beat Florida by 15 in winning the title at Mohegan Sun and are included in most national polls. They have a very good team.

  3. Good luck Mike, his general pattern since last year has been trying to legitimize the awful American conference. Just this week he votes UCONN 13th (they end up 18th), SMU 18th, (they end up 25th) and Cincy 19th (they end up 24th), and really wanted to get Tulsa in, who ended up 36th. He wasn't the extreme voter on any of them, but the AAC favored pattern is always there. And hey, it's his vote so his call, he has to watch that awful conference all year....might as well try and make it sound better than it is. I don't blame him!
