Got my first glimpse of incoming UConn freshman Phil Nolan in action this afternoon at the Greater Hartford Pro-Am. While it's impossible and somewhat silly to draw too many conclusions from one game in the loose, defense-optional atmosphere of the pro-am, the 6-9 Milwaukee product showed some impressive skills. He scored 22 of his game-high 32 points in the second half to lead Hot 93.7 FM to a blowout victory.
No doubt, the lefty's got a smooth jumper and good range, as evidenced by the accompanying video. He's got some nice athleticism, too, as the alley-oop dunk near the end of the video shows.
There's also no doubt that Nolan needs to bulk up and get stronger. And while he scored on some nice inside moves on Saturday, he'll have to be a lot tougher and stronger to mix it up down low in Big East play.
How much can UConn expect from Nolan this season? Too early to tell, but there's no doubt he'll get plenty of minutes to show what he can do.
Anyway, here's a video of some of Saturday's highlights, where Nolan hits a few 3-pointers, makes a few inside moves, throws down an alley-oop dunk ... then talks a little bit about himself and why he chose UConn:
