Ready Freddie?

Two-time Register MVP and All-State selection Freddie Wilson is a backup freshman guard for Seton Hall. He’s averaging just 1.3 points per game in limited playing time, but he’s getting good tutelage under Pirate senior Jordan Theodore.

“He’s learning from one of the best point guards in the league,” said Seton Hall associate head coach Shaheen Holloway, a pretty good point guard himself for the Pirates back in the late-1990’s. “He’s starting to understand what it takes to be a point guard in this league.”

Theodore, who leads the Big East in assists, plays over 36 minutes a game, so for Wilson to get more minutes, he’s starting to see some time at shooting guard, as well. Holloway says the thing that’s most impressed him about Wilson is his “ability to break people down and create his own shot. Other than Jordan Theodore, he’s the only other player we have who can do that.”

Wilson graduated from Hillhouse last year and stepped straight into Division 1 basketball and the Big East.

“It’s a different speed coming from high school to college,” Holloway said. “He’s playing well. He’s starting to feel more comfortable at both positions.”

*** UConn is still waiting for clarification from the NCAA on whether or not these three games count towards Jim Calhoun’s record. If Calhoun were missing these games due to illness or some other reason, the games would be his. But since he’s sitting out per NCAA suspension, it’s still not clear.

*** UConn won’t practice tomorrow after moving to a hotel closer to Piscataway. The Huskies will practice at a nearby high school on Thursday and at The RAC on Friday. The reason why UConn’s game with Rutgers on Saturday is an 8 p.m. start: there’s a Rutgers women’s game at The RAC at 2 p.m.

Sheesh!
