Going to California

The trip to Anaheim to face San Diego State in the Sweet 16 will be a sort of homecoming for senior guard Donnell Beverly, who grew up about 45 minutes away in Los Angeles. It’ll be the closest Beverly has played to home in his four years at UConn.

“It’s a blessing,” Beverly said. “When I saw the bracket, I was hoping we’d get this far, and we did it. We’re in the Sweet 16, and it’s a real accomplishment to get this far.”

He expects numerous friends and family to want to attend the game.

“I’m going to need everybody on the team’s tickets,” Beverly added. “Hopefully, I can show some guys around, get them some In-N-Out burgers and some things they haven’t had before.”

  1. Donnell Beverly should take a backseat to anything this team does, whether on or off the court. He's the least poised senior in recent memory. He honestly plays the way I would imagine a freshman would.

  2. And yet somebody a lot smarter than you named him a Captain, and plays him in big spots. God, "fans" like Jeff do their best to make Connecticut basketball absolutely miserable. Go grab your pom poms and root for the ladies, clown.

  3. Jeff, didn't he play well in the win Saturday? Why is it that UConn has such lousy fans. The UConn faithful cannot wait to criticize Coach C or the players at any chance. Yet, when you look at a school with true fans, you see that they embrace the team. Think about Duke; they could lay a huge stinky on national tv, and afterward, their fans would ask to french kiss Coach K's behind...whereas UConn's "fans" would rip Calhoun and the players a new one.

  4. Yeah, not sure what good ripping a college athlete does. Sure, he's on full scholarship, but he's still a college kid. And plenty of other college athletes are on scholarship in sports where, if they play poorly or don't play much at all, they don't have to worry about fans ripping them on blogs, message boards, etc.
