Wanted to put out a reminder (warning?): I'll be doing my first-ever live chat on UConn men's hoops at www.nhregister.com/chat on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Feel free to stop by, ask a question, no big whoop. Here, I'll give you a topic: the chick pea is neither a chick nor a pea. Discuss ...
what kind of impact can we expect from Jamal Coombs? Do you think he will help out for our lack of height right now? Can he play the 4 at all? What about a line up of Walker, dyson, Jamal, slide stan to the 4, and then Alex O.
ReplyDeleteCoombs will definitely not play the four. He's a versatile swingman (two and three) who can shoot a little bit and do a little bit of everything. Your lineup of Walker, Dyson, Coombs, Robinson and Oriakhi is certainly not out of the question at times, though Jim Calhoun would prefer to avoid that. But if Charles Okwandu can't get the job done, Calhoun will -- begrudgingly -- move Robinson to the four -- at least until Ater Majok is eligible.
ReplyDeleteIt's going to tough this year without a "real" center. Can Majok play the 5? I predict this is the first year in a long time (7 or 8 seasons I'm guessing) that they don't lead the nation in blocks/game. I haven't seen the team play yet so I can't really speculate, but I'm guessing this is going to be a pretty different look than year's past even though they're in the top 15 preseason. Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteMajok is the team's best shot-blocker, per Jim Calhoun, but he's not a five. He's more of a face-to-the-basket power forward who can knock down the 15-footer, maybe even the occational trey.
ReplyDeleteUConn nearly lost out to Mississippi State last year in leading the nation in blocked shots but just barely edged them out, I believe. This year, you're right: they won't lead the nation. (In fact, Mississippi State likely will).
The Huskies will be very different this year but, judging by the first two exhibitions -- and granted, they're just exhibitions against Division II opponents -- they are going to run and gun and be fun to watch.
did you have interest before becoming a beat writer in Uconn basketball or was it more of just going to a newspaper and applying for a job? Seems like being a beat writer would be a lot of fun
ReplyDeleteMajok's legs are like butter. Just thinking about them is making me faklempt.
ReplyDeleteFaklempt in your schanectichazoid? Great questions all -- except Godfather, who just wants to know how great Evan Turner and his Buckeyes will be this year -- but let's save some for tomorrow's chat: www.nhregister.com/chat at 2 p.m.
ReplyDeleteThanks! See you tomorrow!
