Hello, Cleveland!

Greetings from the Bronx, where it's cold but not raining … yet. Looking like the rain is going to hold off and we'll get in Game 2 of the ALCS tonight.

I didn't make practice today because I was driving down to the Bronx to cover tonight's game, but check out colleague Chris Hunn's story on UConn's first official practice in tomorrow's Register. I did learn that the Huskies are hosting Cory Joseph on an official visit this weekend. He was at First Night last night.

Joseph is a 6-foot-3 guard out of Findlay Prep in Henderson, NV, who is ranked as the No. 6 point guard in the Class of 2010 by scout.com.

Also at First Night last night was frequent UConn visitor Andre Drummond and a new name – Cleveland Melvin, who plays at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass. Melvin is a 6-7, Class of 2010 forward.

As mentioned last night, Maurice Harkless, a 6-6 junior forward from Forest Hills (N.Y.) High, was in the house, as well. And, of course, Roscoe Smith, who we talked to last night.

(Quiz question: What all-time comedy classic features the line, "Hello, Cleveland!"

  1. 70s show?

Why so mum on Cory....appears his visit has been really quiet

  2. Not sure if they're being mum, just know that we didn't run across Cory on Friday at First Night. More coincidence than anything else, I'm guessing.

  3. Any particular reason you use scout.com? Every single person I know uses Rivals.com when it comes to recruiting, and it seems to be held as the most credible by the college football blogosphere.

  4. Anything on Andre Drummond? Very rarely does Uconn get a chance to keep elite talent in state, as there usually isn't any. I've read he is compared to Dwight Howard.

  5. All I know is that UConn appears to be in a very good position to land Drummond. He's on campus more than some current students, it seems, and the program is obviously very high on him. We'll see how it ends up, but he does appear to be special. The first time I saw him play was in a summer league game two years ago. I had no idea who he was, but here's this sinewy, athletic, 6-9 kid running the floor, blocking shots and dunking. Then I find out he was just (I believe) 14 years old at the time! Wow.

Tried to see him again this summer, but he was always traveling with AAU or injured every time I went to see him. I know he was on crutched recently (stress fracture, I believe), but nothing serious.

As for scout.com vs. rivals.com -- I really don't know why I tend to quote from the former. When I took over this beat two years ago, I subscribed to scout and have been using them ever since. Never been questioned about it until now.

These services are just a frame of reference, anyway. If a kid is ranked No. 6 by rivals and No. 11 by scout, does that really mean anything in the long run? The list of kids ranked outside the Top 100 by either service who wound up becoming stars is too long to mention here.
